Backrest & Headrest Mechanisms

Five products for sofa and armchair manufacturers: three CSS connection sets, a sofa backrest adjustment mechanism and a 6-position headrest hinge. This page sets out what each one does, where the CSS sets differ from one another and what to include when you ask for a quote.

What each one does

CSS connection sets

A connection set that carries the opening and closing movement of a seat. The link arm is screwed to the timber frame, and the joint bolt passes through the point the arm turns around and is tightened into the nut plate behind. All three types fit the same way; they differ in kit contents, material grade and surface finish. The name is also often written "CCS".

Sofa backrest adjustment mechanism

Moves the backrest forward and backward to change the seat depth. Pulled forward by hand, the back moves to the sitting position; pushed back, it moves to the relaxing position that deepens the seat, and it rests in one of these two end positions, with no steps in between. Scissor arms on each side connect the back to the frame, and two steel tubes join the left and right units. It is made with L22 and L26 tubes; how many sets a sofa needs depends on the width of the back.

6-position headrest hinge

Fixes the head support at six separate angles, 15 degrees per step. As the headrest is pushed forward the steps engage in turn; after the last step the headrest is released and returns to its starting position. How many are used depends on the width of the headrest. In the trade it is also called a headrest mechanism.

CSS 3, CSS 4 and CSS Lux: where is the difference?

All three do the same job and fit the same way. CSS Lux and CSS 3 come with exactly the same parts; the difference between them is the level of material grade and surface finish. CSS 4 comes with a different kit.

  • The roller cap (CSS 4 only) fits at the pivot and stops metal rubbing directly on metal; it is the part that reduces squeaking and wear.
  • The corner cover plate (CSS Lux and CSS 3) is a pressed sheet with three holes; it closes off the joint, spreads load over a wider area and reduces strain at the fixing point.

We do not publish figures such as sheet thickness, coating thickness or cycle life without verifying them, which is why they are not in the table.
