A connecting plate is a flat sheet-metal plate that sits under the fixing when two furniture bodies or profiles are joined. Its square holes stop a square-necked bolt from turning, so there is no need to hold the far side with a spanner while tightening. By spreading load across the plate surface instead of the narrow area under a screw head, it delays the widening of the screw hole in chipboard and MDF bodies.

What is the square hole for?
The neck of a square-necked bolt seats in this hole and is prevented from turning. There is then no need to hold the bolt with a spanner from the other side, and assembly can be done by one person from one side.
Why use this instead of a normal washer?
A round washer only supports the narrow area under the screw head. The connecting plate is a longer plate, so it spreads load across the surface between the two holes and delays loosening, especially in chipboard bodies.
