If there is room at the sides of the body and you want the frame to share the load, the armed type is preferred. Where there is no room for an arm, or a very slim body is required, the armless type is used.

The mechanism is fitted in pairs, symmetrically at both sides of the seat. Whether a centre support is needed on long seats is determined by the seat width.
